What causes birth injuries?
Birth injuries usually result from complications during pregnancy, labor, or delivery. The range of injury varies greatly, from a scrape or bruise to the death of the baby. The most serious injuries are usually the result of oxygen deprivation, resulting in brain injuries of some type. In addition, nerve damage can occur during delivery, resulting in paralysis or other incapacity. There are naturally occurring circumstances where these injuries happen, such as a compressed or twisted umbilical cord, a baby too large for delivery, or a breach (sideways) fetus. However, most of these so-called “natural” circumstances can be addressed by competent medical personnel.
Most birth injuries are caused by a failure to address in a timely way problems that occur during labor and delivery, such as those above. Failure to perform a c-section, overuse of pitocin or oxytocin to induce labor, misuse of forceps during delivery, failure to diagnose uterine rupture, or miscalculation of the size of the baby, resulting in delivery trauma, can all result in serious brain injuries or nerve damage. Sadly, most of these problems can be prevented.
